The biomedical and health research and innovation of the Valencian Community meets for the first time in a meeting open to society

The conference, organized by the La Fe Health Research Institute (IIS La Fe) has brought together the research staff of the 7 research foundations attached to the Conselleria de Sanitat Universal i Salut Pública.

The biomedical and health research foundations of the Valencian Community met this Friday in the assembly hall of the Hospital La Fe on the occasion of the 1st Meeting on Biomedical Research and Innovation in the Valencian Community. The aim of the conference was to publicize the activity of health research institutes and biomedical research centers and share good practices and success stories in the management and development of research, innovation and relations with society.

The health research institutes La Fe (IIS La Fe), the Hospital Clínico de Valencia (INCLIVA) and Alicante (ISABIAL), the Foundation for the Fundación para el Fomento de la Investigación Sanitaria y Biomédica de la Comunitat Valenciana (FISABIO), the Fundación de Investigación del Hospital General Universitario de Valencia (FIHGUV), the Fundación del Hospital Provincial de Castellón (FHPC) and the Príncipe Felipe Research Center (CIPF) are the research centers linked to the Ministry of Universal Health and Public Health.

These foundations produce most of the scientific publications in the health sector in the Valencian Community and, if all the scientific sectors are considered, they occupy the second position in scientific production after the set of universities, being a central piece of the research and innovation system of the Valencian Community.

Research, innovation and society

The day has been developed in three sessions dedicated to research, innovation and transfer and Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI). Each research center has shared an ongoing project in each of these areas. Research and innovation projects and initiatives that have revealed, according to the scientific director of IIS La Fe, Guillermo Sanz, who opened the meeting, the presence of biomedical research in the Valencian Community in major national and international initiatives. From medical imaging, artificial intelligence, through personalized medicine and the mechanisms of muscle aging and fragility.

In the session on innovation and transfer, examples of translational and transformative research in the field of medical-hospital research were shared. Finally, in the block dedicated to Responsible Research and Innovation, different initiatives have been presented on citizen participation, open access, gender equality, scientific education, ethics and governance that are being developed by the research centers of the Valencian Community.

Conclusions

The conference ended with a round table in which the management of the research centers gathered participated. The representatives of the foundations have agreed on the need to continue working on a regional biomedical research strategy that makes it possible to face the new challenges aimed at developing advanced therapies, more precise medicines supported by the use of data and artificial intelligence.

It has also made reference to the scenario opened by the Science Law and by the Biomedical Research Law in matters related to the conditions of people who work in research and innovation to face the scientific and social challenges related to biomedical research and sanitary.
