The IIS La Fe hosts Nobel Laureate Charles M. Rice in a new edition of “Meet the Nobel”

The American researcher was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2020 for his decisive contribution to the discovery of the hepatitis C virus

La Fe Health Research Institute has held a new edition of the 'Meet the Nobel' initiative, featuring Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine 2020 Charles M. Rice, during his stay in València in the context of the meeting of the juries of the Rei Jaume I Awards.

The event is part of the programme of activities associated with the visit of Nobel Prize winners to the city, an annual gathering of leading figures in international science who serve on the jury of these awards, coordinated by the Rei Jaume I Awards Foundation.

Charles M. Rice was awarded the Nobel Prize together with Harvey J. Alter and Michael Houghton for their contribution to the discovery of the hepatitis C virus, a breakthrough that enabled the development of diagnostic and therapeutic tools that have transformed the clinical management of this infectious disease worldwide.

During his stay in València, the researcher took part in an open conversation held at the IIS La Fe Auditorium, where he shared his scientific career, reflected on current challenges in biomedical research, and answered questions from attending researchers.

A session moderated by IIS La Fe researchers

The session was moderated by hepatologist and head of the Hepatology, Hepatobiliopancreatic Surgery and Transplantation research group, Dr Marina Berenguer, and principal investigator of the Experimental Hepatology and Liver Transplantation Joint Research Unit, Dr Laia Tolosa. In addition, the Head of the International Office, Violeta Pellicer, welcomed attendees.

The 'Meet the Nobel' initiative is now established as a meeting point between the IIS La Fe research community and some of the most relevant figures in global science, fostering knowledge exchange and inspiring new scientific vocations.

With this activity, IIS La Fe reinforces its commitment to scientific excellence, internationalisation, and the creation of spaces for direct dialogue between top-level science and its research environment.
