FORTIFY is a European project funded by the Innovative Health Initiative Joint Undertaking that aims to support the implementation of the European Health Data Space. The project addresses one of the main challenges in health data reuse: how to enable secondary use of health data for research and innovation while protecting intellectual property, trade secrets, commercially confidential information and other sensitive innovation assets.
The project brings together 33 public and private partners from academia, healthcare, industry, policy and data access organisations. Over three years, FORTIFY will develop and test legal, governance and technical solutions to make health data sharing safer, clearer and more practical. These tools will include legal guidance, model contracts, governance frameworks, and technical solutions such as traceability and watermarking mechanisms.
IIS La Fe participates in FORTIFY by contributing its expertise in health data, medical imaging and secure data reuse environments. Its role will help validate practical solutions in real-world health data settings, supporting more trusted and efficient access to health data for research and innovation.
In the long term, FORTIFY aims to reduce uncertainty around health data access, strengthen safeguards for innovators and data holders, and increase trust in the responsible reuse of health data. By doing so, the project will contribute to faster research, better health innovation and a more competitive European health data ecosystem.
