José María Millán, IIS La Fe researcher, appointed new director of the Center for Biomedical Network Research on Rare Diseases

The Center for Biomedical Network Research (CIBER), under the Spanish National Institute of Health Carlos III (ISCIII), has appointed José María Millán as the new director of the thematic area of Rare Diseases.

José María Millán holds a PhD in Biology from the University of Valencia and has an extensive background in research and scientific management focused on rare diseases. He currently heads the Molecular, Cellular and Genomic Biomedicine Research Group at the Health Research Institute La Fe (IIS La Fe), where he also served as general director between 2016 and 2017.

At the international level, he has been a member of the scientific committee of Orphanet-Spain and served as Spain's representative on the Scientific Advisory Board of Genetics at Orphanet International. He is also a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Spanish Federation for Rare Diseases (FEDER) and participates in the Monitoring and Control Commission of the Rare Diseases Information System of the Valencian Community (SIER-CV).

His research focuses on genetic diagnosis and the development of therapeutic strategies for neurosensory diseases, particularly those with a rare genetic basis.

With this appointment, IIS La Fe reinforces its role as a reference center in rare disease research, a strategic area for the institution. The designation of José María Millán as director of CIBER on Rare Diseases represents recognition of the research work carried out at the institute and an opportunity to strengthen collaboration among excellence groups at the national level.

His main research lines focus on genetic diagnosis and therapeutic strategies for neurosensory diseases
